Video cam viewfinder HMD

I had seen a few things in the archives about using a
video cameras vewfinder as a HMD. There might be more
but I don't feel like looking. I just have a few
questions about this. I might consider using a cameras
vewfinder due to cost. I had taken out the view finder
from an old school VHS cam that rests on the shoulder.
I don't remember how many wires it had. I am wondering
what each of the wires are for and how do I find out
what wire is what? I know the pos and neg wires are
red and black respecively. How do I find out what
voltage to use? Is it possible to leech power off the
compsit video output on the motherboard? How would I
go about adjusting the display to get best view? Also
how the hell would I hook it all up once I determined
what does what? I presume its just a matter of hooking
up the proper wires to an RCA cable and hooking up the
pos and neg wires to the batteries.

thanks
