Purchase an off the shelf display device
(http://www.tekgear.com/category.cfm?category=Monocular) It is the best
way to get started. All of these devices are plug and play and allow
you to get working with your rig and application right away.

To put it into perspective: Did you buy your computer monitor or did
you make it yourself out of spare parts that you ripped out of broken
electronics?

A HMD is a harder project than building a desktop monitor as you have
human factors and safety issues to consider on top of all the other
electronics issues. Because the unit is in very close proximity to your
eye and the electronics are worn on the body, you have to take extra
precautions to insure safety.
