freetype and xterm

Does anyone have freetype2 fonts and an X windows
terminal program working together nicely? I have tried
xterm and rxvt-unicode -- both of which support Xft2.
I can see my TrueType fonts in the terminal window but
I have a few issues. My terminal isn't colorized like
it is at the console. Also, the vt escape codes are
showing on the screen. Is it my font? One other
feature that normal rxvt has (but not rxvt-uni) that
is great is Shift+KP_UP +KP_DOWN increases and
decreases font size. Maybe I'm using the wrong
terminal program. Any suggestions for a x terminal program?
