Daniel, I am an RF Field Engineer working on the deployment and troubleshooting of wireless data networks. I use mapping programs like MapInfo and a variety of homegrown and industry standard RF propagation models. My fantasy was that while I was in the field I could use a HUD to display meaningful information from these graphic intensive applications. Well most of the HUDs available on my limited budget are not up to that task. And quartering a VGA screen is painful. I later cam to realize that a HUD in text mode offered many advantages over a graphic intensive environment. For example, when logged in remotely over an RF link to the back end system, I could be looking at my equipment and monitoring the diagnostics I was running over the net in the HUD instead of alternating between my instruments and the laptop screen. Furthermore, this arrangement allowed me to have a machine dedicated to Linux while running Windows on my laptop which I required for graphic intensive applications. My Linux Machine was in a format or 4.5 x 4 x 2 inches and possessed required I/O, PC Card and CF card slots. The only major drawback was the fact that on the laptop batteries I used, I could get about 2-3 hours of operation out of it. Since I had a DC to AC converter in my vehicle, I was always charging a backup battery. Cordially Charles Bolton -----Original Message----- From:[mailto:

Subject: Re: [Wear-Hard] Low Cost Wearable I am curious about the intended use of your wearable - I've been trying to work out the details of my planned machine (also centered around a pov cam) given my low low hardware budget. Perhaps we are attacking the same problem? I've though about picking up an old Libretto or something, but with Pocket PCs being so ceap... but I don't know. Also, may guess from your sig that your inspiration was Snow Crash? -daniel hengeveld On Fri, 10 Dec 2004 3:04pm, Tom Longson wrote: > I'm looking for a dirt cheap wearable computer setup, preferably hand > made to some degree. > > The goal is to use a POV cam and a GPS, so it would need video in and > serial.
