Jennifer,
You may wish to consider Energy Depot batteries with RCA out -- that's what
I used when I created my wearable. I'm sure there are other similar ones out
there, but that should give you a good start. Consider RCA style jacks with
a Y-splitter for hot-swapping. Careful not to short out the battery by
bumping it when swapping which  could cause horrible things to happen --
think explosions -- so whichever isn't being used should be covered somehow
(maybe with a female plug that has no cord) when not in use. If you're
putting it in a backpack, you may want to cut a hole by the fan (and other
holes) for ventilation, although that's tricky because it could get wet. (I
don't think there are any magic cooling answers out there if you're set on
using a laptop.) The Twiddler should take it out of standby mode if your
O.S. is set up that way (mine works that way.)
