At Georgia Tech, we've been using two systems. One is the OQO Model
01+ (http://oqo.com), which, astoundingly, just works (avoid the 01,
as it's got some issues)! We're also using the Intel Stargate/Platform
X (http://platx.sf.net) with a CF VGA card. It's limited in terms of
I/O, but boy does it get good battery life - 18+ hours on a 45
watt-hour battery! We've also been looking at gumstix
(http://gumstix.com), but it doesn't have enough I/O to work; it's got
bluetooth but no USB host, and not enough CF slots are available to
fix that *and* have VGA and storage.
