quite true, not a very consumer oriented model, the monocle..

Sharper Image is supposedly the exclusive on the binocular one, which, with
what one would think is more market penetration and thus selling for $399
for two eyes.

(probably not that simple) Of course it just has to send video to two
displays instead of one, so not that much more complicated, and the displays
are usually cheap, it is the R&D and hardware drivers that really cost.
