Oh, wow.  Thanks for the link.  I always fail to remember what a great info
source your blog is.  On reflection, I think that you are absolutely correct
concerning the numbermouse.  Does anyone know what sort of software-side
work would be required to make a multi-kepress keyboard out of this device's
10-key pad?

Also, there is a second 10-key optical mouse from 3m available for $45 from
amazon:
