This is my own interest as well. I'd like the system to be very unobtrusive, and HUDs are not, at least not yet. Note also that without the HUD, the hardware is off-the-shelf. A Libretto (from Toshiba) and a Twiddler are all you need. The price for the pair is around $1500, which is not dirt cheap, but it's not terribly expensive either. Using an H/PC would bring it down under $1000, but with less flexibility. I'm not concerned about the ease of interfacing to existing apps using voice output, since I expect to write most or all of them myself for this application.
