The way the Virtual I-Glasses! do it is with a backlight and folding optics - the LCD's aren't in your LOS, but a pair of partial mirrors are, and the LCD's are mounted above the mirrors (and your LOS). This image you see is a projection onto the lenses, so it's less dependant on the environmental lighting.
