Depends on what your wearable is built on and it's o/s.
There are simple IrDA adaptors made to plug in a serial port, I even saw
one for a parallel port once but the drivers were only win95 (YUCK) this
would be a good low bandwidth way to go.  In fact, if you can stand real
low bandwidth, use packet radio. 1200bps but you can get extended range. I
currently get appx. 10 miles to my home pc from the laptop on commercial
itenerant frequency's (I'd use ham freq. but I dont want to hog bandwitdh
