Java on strongArm or in linux?

Can you run java on the strongArm or in linux?  Also, for my edification
could someone tell me why linux appears to be the OS of choice for
wearable projects?  I'm a novice programmer that dabbles in java, but I
recall all my engineering friends in undergrad were in love with unix.
What are the big advantages of unix?
