Okay, I've been following this thread for a while now. I think it is about time I start commenting ... First off, java ain't that compact. Any C implementation is going to be lighter weight than any java implementation. How important compactness in terms of footprint is a question I can't answer. Let's not get into the portability of java. It ain't. Sorry. Second off, I'd like to solicit opinions and perhaps start a new thread. How useful / useable / desirable is a GUI in a wearable? I mean, Win95 / WinNT / MacOS / BeOS are all GUI-oriented operating systems at differing levels. If you are using a small display or a low power display can you really afford to have a GUI? Especially if that GUI was designed for a desktop machine. Methinks that is the overwhelming justification for Linux, in that it is not a GUI based OS by nature.
