I bought the Parvus scalable CPU board and an SMOS card, not cheap at
all (around $1100).  The cheapest boards have the cpu stuck on the board
(not cardpc spec).  I believe the MIT pages suggest the zfmicro board is
pretty cheap. http://www.zfmicro.com/.

prolly, the toshiba 2.5" hd series.  Reliable, fairly inexpensive, low
power.  Watch the watts when you look at hds.  They can vary quite a
bit, and not necessarilly proportional to performance.
