NT's kernel is VERY unix like, it was designed by a group of people who were involved in several diferent unix kernel design teams. However one cannot draw immediate parallels like customizability and the like, it IS Microsoft after all and if anyone could get their source code they might make less money. If you try, you can effectively use NT on a command line basis as most services can be controlled in this manner. The new MacOS is in the same boat, going with a unix like kernel as an approach to true multitasking which they have lacked while being able to support a lot of the older and loved apps. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Nordstrom [mailto:] Sent: Tuesday, August 04, 1998 7:35 AM To:
Subject: Is the New Mac OS/WinNT Unix based? I've heard that the new Mac OS will be based on a Unix-type kernal. I've also heard similiar claims that NT is more Unix-like than 95. Are these claims correct and if so what does "Type" or "like" really mean. Could either suplant Linux as a wearable favorite (ignoring the size factor by presuming either could be cut to the core if necessary)? -- Bill Nordstrom University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center 5323 Harry Hines Blvd. Dallas, TX 75235-9039 W:214-648-9227 Fax: 214-648-8694 email
