Great!  I found that jameco is selling a dc to dc converter that also
uses/charges betteries that give you +5 and +12 volts, with little power
waste (Being designed for battery systems)  it's their part number 109276
and is unfortunately on closeout.
it also gives a -26 volt. they say it also delivers 350vac but the
technical sheet doesn't mention that voltage at the pin-outs. it takes a
16VDC max input for charge/operate. looks like a switching supply but is
tiny for delivering 3.75 amps at the 5volt side.

I'll do some power testing to see how much it wastes in heat.
