Take a look at man setfont(8).  There are many different console fonts,
though they all seem to be 80xSomething.  Some of them do, however space
things a bit differently, and that may help with clarity.

Another thing that might help is entering the switch "vga=ask" at the lilo
prompt and selecting 40x25 textmode, though this seems to screw up pine
quite a bit.  Perhaps Termcap could be changed...  If 40x25 does not come
up as one of the modes, type "scan" and it will probe your card.
