For people interested in interfacing wearables to cars: CAN is a protocol specified by BOSCH GMBH to help car vendors interconnect all electronic control units(ECU) in the car. It is widely used in Europe, gaining acceptance in the U.S. It is a multiplexed serial protocol - very similar to SPI/SCI. Rates upto 1 Mbps is possible. One of the back issues of EDN Europe has a good review for all the microcontrollers containing CAN modules. Once one gets access to the bus in the car, all sorts of applications maybe possible: starting the car remotely, adjusting seats, checking the car status, starting the a/c, warning the driver if the alarm is going off, etc. Getting access to the bus could be achieved through a CAN<->IR/Rf gateway. I haven't seen a commercially available product that does this, however, haven't looked into it extensively.
