RE: Sony Eyeglass Display Announcement

this article is a bit vague and i think the amounts can't be correct.
what's probably correct is that Sony is going to be introducing the third
generation of its Glasstron product line in november.

Sony began selling the 1st model, the Glasstron PLM-A100, in 1996 for about
$1000. This was a 370 gram unit (head-portion only) with two 0.7-inch 180K
pixel LCDs. Powered by standard InfoLithium batteries, NPFxxx, you can
choose your size. They run about $600 currently, though they are technically
discontinued.

Sony then introduced the PLM-A55 in June of this year (when they
discontinued the PLM-A100) for about $799 msrp. See
<http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/portable/camcorder/camcorders8mmac
cessories/plm-a55_specs.shtml> for details. They dropped the weight to 150
grams for the head-mounted portion (battery pack is still counted
separately) and dropped the power consumption some, they claim 3.8W. It has
the same two 0.7-inch 180K pixel LCDs, but the overal display experience is
more crisp than the PLM-A100, which could be optics or converters, I don't
know. I own a pair of these and I have driven them with 800x600 16-bit VGA
through a good NTSC converter and have found they do an *incredible* job
preserving quality, way beyond what i was expecting from 180K LCDs. these
displays are several times more crisp than the Olympus Eye-Trek's, which
give me a headache at 640x480, let alone 800x600. Both the Olympus
Eye-Trek's and the Sony Glasstrons are available only in Japan, but you can
easily buy them through Japan Direct -- see
http://www.japan-direct.com/#Other -- I used them and found them a pleasure
to deal with (and I only paid ~$669 for the Glasstrons at the time due to
exchange rates).

If the new glasstron model in fact 1024x768 and Sony has kept or improved
the rest of the optics and converter, this next model will certainly be a
terrific product -- except for that $2000 price tag. that price doesn't make
sense with the rest of the product line, which is why i question if they got
it right in the article. if it is $2000, i will wait for it to drop. in the
mean time, i would highly recommend the PLM-A55's, these are a terrific
product (though i know steve thinks otherwise :).

$2,181.40 USD, according to the Universal Currency Converter. I'm waiting
on tech specs and a visual on them before I rush out, though it sure as
heck looks interesting.
