Yes, you need a kernel - and a whole lot more. When you run Linux on a wince machine, it is no longer wince. You've changed the operating system. So, with that in mind, why limit your search to wince? People have already gotten linux running on the HP200LX (my favorite organizer for the last year or so). I haven't run linux on it largely due to my belief that the productivity etc apps out there aren't as mature as what's already on my 200LX.
