Though the brand name/model escapes me at the moment, isnt there a laptop
"out there" that allows you to hot-swap its cd-rom / hdd / battery / floppy
drive from a single port?

I would believe that beside assuring that you had the polarity of the plug
you wanted to use aligned properly, you would want to connect data first,
then power. This can be achieved by staggering the connections.
