I'm not sure about recharging, but I know it is pretty complicated with the charger that Sony sells for their camcorder batteries. Knowing how discharged they are is easy though; li-ions have a very linear voltage drop as they discharge. In my experience the 7.2v Li-ion batteries from Sony charge up to 8.5v and slowly discharge to about 6v before they suddenly go. -Paul -- R.
