I've got a message in to an LCD guy...apparently direct DC *can*
polarize
the LCD material permanently, and render the display useless.  From
memory
he said that it's usually powered with something like a 30KHz AC wave,
and
that's the standard output from LCD driver chips.  

He's checking his books for me...don't fry your Tomagatchis before he
gets back to me.
