Well, Sony (and I'm sure others) makes a set of noise-cancelling headphones that work remarkably well. They can't filter out background noises like a TV in the distance, but they do a hell of a job on hums and engine noise. I tried a friend's, and the refrigerator fell dead silent when I flipped them on. He says he can't use them when he drives, because his car is cantankerous, and he can't hear the engine to know if something is wrong with it. Paul Archer PS.
