Actually I was only commenting on the first half of your "The fundamental
tone is unnecessary. The harmonics are what really count."  The second
half is fine since harmonics are what formants are made up of.  A typical
formant consists of a few harmonics at any instant, though the formant
may slide up or down the spectrum during a diphthong like the oy in "boy".
