I just had an interesting idea-- and another way to really get the FCC on your
back.. Timeline was/is selling Analogue Cell Station Transceivers; Could one
get a Cell station and an old Analogue Cell phone (Like my Nokia 211) with a cell
modem and connect the two? Hack together some interface hardware to connect your
cell station to whatever boxen you have, and there you are. Probably not much
faster than TNC, but perhaps more stable?
