CDPD is a hot topic in the wearable community, since it is a widely deployed wireless network. Steve is right that it is rather slow (19.2kbps bursts, perhaps 4800 sustained?) and somewhat time consuming to sync up with the network. However, it has the advantage of near round-the-country (US, that is!) availability and fairly reliable. I subscribe with Go.America for the nation wide roaming. BAM only has the east coast. My unlimited service is $50 (?)/month. If you want to go with Go.America, let me know and we can each get $10 back on the first bill. I am using the Novatel Wireless Minstrel with my Pilot and my laptop. When I purchased it a year ago it was $300, but you can find it now for $99 with a one year contract. Damn early adopter tax! Check out: http://www.swcp.com/~hudson/pilot/minstrel.html for info on how to fab a custom cable to allow the Minstrel to be used with the laptop. The Minstrel is great for Pilot connectivity and ok for laptop use, while the Sage is ok for the Pilot and great for the laptop. I'll be happy to answer anyone's questions about CDPD and the Minstrel. If you want to get an idea of the speed, let me know and I'll let you telnet into my machine to try out the performance.
