Hi Tristan:

Consider a lower-powered Libretto (older ones) or an IBM PC110.  These
little guys (I'm sure on the latter, not sure on the former) may require
extra bulk for external VGA and serial port (first needed for an HMD,
second needed for a Twiddler, if you want to use one), but you can get an
8-20MB PC110 (486SX) and fixings to run Linux for around $300-$500
