I used to work at the Numerical Aerospace Simulations Facility at NASA/Ames
Research Center. This building was considered NASA's premeire
supercomputing facility.

I was an intern on the Network/Web/Security team there for 2 years. The
project you speak of, or an incredibly similar effort, involved
thirty-something PPro 200s, networked with MiraNet (although they seemed to
have switched to 100baseT) in an attempt to create a very inexpensive
massively parallel distributed computing system.

The project was called Whitney, and here is the homepage with more info
than you could ever want: ;)

It has links to research papers and other projects.

Either way, it'll kill you. -- Christopher Lambert
