Greg- X shouldn't take much CPU at all - I live in X by default. Make sure its not trying to poll one of your serial ports as a mouse port. Also, you might see if there are options to your APM utilities that ignore small spikes in CPU use - I could see X doing that. The other thing is to try different X configurations/servers and see what takes the least power.
