NOTE: This heavily depends on what window manager you use under X. If you use twm, wm or even fvwm you should be fine, using KDE or GNOME will bring the cpu and ram use back up and past that of windows NT/98. remember the more "cute" or "neat" features a wm has the more ram/resources it will use. I have found that not using a wm for some instances works well, I start X with the application I desire to run, but this is for dedicated information/control panels and not a wearable.. I would try using fvwm first, and then explore some of the older and much smaller window managers later.
