Twiddler problems

I could use some Twiddler advice, if anyone has it. I'm trying to
make one work on a Slackware Linux 2.2 box, and am not having much
luck. In X, nothing happens until I move the twidder; then, the mouse
pointer jumps all over the screen, even though the mouse button is not
held down. It also types lots of ^H and @ characters. If I hit any
of the keys, it doesn't type anything. In console mode, I don't get any
characters at all, regardless of the buttons pushed or the movements
made.

As a test, I added a printf("x") to the driver where it checks for being
out of sync, and sure enough - I get a constant stream of 'x's whenever
I run it.

I've checked (as much as I know how to) that nothing is using either
serial port (I've tried both). Gpm is not running. I changed rc.serial
to not execute. I have a ps/2 mouse, and /dev/mouse is linked to
/dev/psaux.

I'm at my wit's end, and any help would be -much- appreciated!
