I had some discussions with a designer of the HUD system in the YF-22
fighter. the only thing I was able to pin down from the man that wasn't
classified was that the angled glass reflector is coated in a prismatic
polymer that is specific to the wavelength you want to reflect. This
eliminates reflections from sunlight, increases contrast in direct sunlight,
and completely eliminates color HUD's. Most of the aircraft systems have
the reflector as a parabolic to sharply focus the image for the pilot and to
make the display dissappear when the pilot is off alignment for targeting
accuracy.

There were some links posted here a while back on hud design, check the
archives... about last year between march and june.
