Here's a possibility. The M1 and other discrete displays (including
viewfinders) are being viewed as discrete components which will
be kept and reused, independent of the CPU core. I've seen mention
of a lot of people who upgrade to a bisquit PC, or a new Pentium
board, etc...and who do not upgrade their displays. Many times,
in fact, I've seen mention of scan converters, to display on lowly
camcorder viewfinders.
Personally, for $500+ I want more than a mono 320x200 QVGA
display. I want something that will appear roughly equivalent to my
desktop's display. The resolution could be lower, but be in color,
or it could be monochrome with full SVGA resolution, but I don't
think that 320x200 mono is acceptable.
If there was a text-only option, a sharp 80x25 mono display would
acceptable to me. Something akin to the original MDA standard.
And the display and driver could probably be pretty simple too.
Now, if someone offered a Hercules compliant option, that might
be a different story -- those things were sharp as a pin, and worked
remarkably well. I wonder if Linux (probably) and Windows
(probably not) support Hercules any more?
