I think the best idea would be to have a tape loop. To minimise size however, you split the display up like those video walls. Thus the amount of wasted tape is severly minimised, and the velocity of the tape is lowered. In order to have enough tape though I think a four spindle system in a sqaure would be better. Remeber to make the spindles shaped as so: _ / \ \_/ Since this will prevent the tape from falling off, and will keep it lined up. (Band Facer technology). To minimise the stretching on the tape, drive all four spindles from the same motor, keeping the speed constant at pretty much all points.
