LOL, the old 300 baud speed limit had nothing to do with the acoustic coupler. At that time the speed limit was determined by MA BELL and the filters you needed to get rid of all her pops and clicks! 56K probably won't work without ESS, but it is probably real difficult to find a Central Office that isn't ESS for testing!
