Am I missing something or are you suggesting a set of acoustic cups?

I have the Konexx 204 acoustic coupler. I have not used it in several
years. If I recall it claimed that under ideal conditions you could
get 14.4 or perhaps 28.8, I don't see the manual here. I think I
regularly got 9600 baud over it. A quick altavista search shows they
are still making them and now claim a top speed of 33k (depending on
lines). They still sell for ~$120.

Anyway, it is a device that looks like a small black handset with
rubber cups that are adjustable for differnt size phones. You plug
the phone cable from your modem into it and it has handy velcro strap
that holds it to the phone handset. It does exactly what you describe.

I found mine very handy back in the days before most hotel phones had
accessible rj11 jacks.

Hope this helps,

Greg
