Directly stimulating neurons by capacitively coupling an AM-modulated 40kHz, 2,000 volt signal
directly into your brain?
Bone is piezoelectric, so I'd expect a large electromechanical contribution to audition with
this device, but Flanagan claims that "nerve deaf" subjects have been able to hear after
training with this device, and so claims that bone conduction isn't the operative mechanism. He
also claims direct occipital stimulation of visual events.
He seems to use the capacitance of extracranial electrodes to tune a resonant HV output stage.
If I put 2,000V across my skull (about 20 cm) then that's a field of 10kV/m or 10mV/um. That's
certainly more than enough to influence ion uptake and to shift action potentials in neural
processes oriented along the field.
A catchier name for his ThinkMan (tm) would be the ElectroShockMan.
Don't try this at home, kidz.
