Well, the ting is (any hard core techie correct me if Im wrong), but a modem RJ-11 jack is 2-wire,a nd telephoen handsets are 4 wire. And IIRC there is some change betwean the signal that comes from a handset and the signal that goes over RJ-11. The benefit of usign a prebuilt solution os you know it'll work, and things like drivers are already written.
