This is almost correct.  In theory, you could do up to 56k with an
accoustic coupler.  Problems would start to come up from background noise,
and maybe even internal noise of the circuit.  You'll definitely want to
put some sort of foam padding on it that'll make a decent seal with the
phone you're using.  If that doesn't work well enough, you could try to
hack up some cheap active noise cancellation (the short, short version:
microphone -> inverting op-amp -> speaker), and you might want to make
sure that you're not getting much internal noise from your circuit.  Of
course, the easiest thing by far is just to reduce your baud rate :)
