alternative output

As a newcomer to the list and to the idea of wearables in general
(Thad Starner's talk at the O'Reilly open source conference this year
got me hooked :), I've been trying to determine how I'd put together
my first wearable in the near future.

I am interested to hear about other people's implementations of
output other than to a HMD. Do those who use audio-only find it
limiting? Is a combination of audio and a visual non-head-mounted
display a realistic idea? I'm envisioning something like a palm pilot
permanently tethered to the wearable, mounted to your arm or
something that could display complementary information that wasn't
suited for audio. of course I'm just letting my mind wander as I have
no experience in actually trying something like this...

I'm reluctant to try a HMD in my first try at a wearable partly due
to price, and partly due to the geek-factor: I'm anti-social enough
as it is - I can't afford to scare people away with some sort of
borg-like contraption ;)
he he he...

As a side note, what short range wireless ethernet products have been
successfully used with wearables by members of the list? I wouldn't
need a very large range at present (quite small actually - I'm
usually in a small office of 3000 sq ft or so), but would like to be
able to grow as the need arises.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated on either subject.

Thanks,
Greg
