Standard microphones (even high quality condenser mics) don't work very well fror VR if you are using an intregrated sound card chip or highly integrated systems (like laptops) due to the EM interference. The ideal solution is a USB microphone (if you have a USB port) which bypass the sound subsystem (of course, then you software has to support this).
