For that price range you can put something together from
used/discarded camcorder parts and spend your money on a converter to
get the vga output of your rig to it.  Don't expect high resolution.  

Alternatively, you could skip the HMD and go for a "dribble tray" -
using a laptop display, mount it on your chest so that you can swing
it out so you can see it when you need it.  Have a look at the picture
of Doug Plat at http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~priestdo/wearable.pics.html
to see what I mean.  Doug started with a machine that was designed to
use pen input, put it on a pair of suspenders and added a hip mounted
keyboard.   Several other folks use this approach as well.  

Once you get the bucks for a HMD you can move the rig off your chest,
till then, you have a system you can walk around with.
