You use a diode in series with each battery, then unplug 1 battery,
replace it with a fresher battery, unplug the other, and plug in another
fresher battery, drop the old ones in the charger, and walk away happy

Schottky diodes are good, bridge rectifiers work well, Schottky bridges
anyone?  <G>
