Well, I know this will be of only limited help, since I can't find the URl anymore, but I ran across a project a year or so ago that involved soldering a cheap ($10-ish) 2D accelerometer to the circuitboard on a Palm Pilot. There was an associated marble game that could be played simply by tilting the Pilot.
