I don’t know what you mean with significant signal conditioning, however Analog Devices (www.analogdevices.com) have some small and accurate? accelerometers (They use to give free samples!). The signal for one of the 2D version is in DCM (duty cycle modulation) ready to be measured directly by a microprocesor. One output pin for X axis one for Y axis.
